Description & Background
Established in 2011 in Hyderabad and based in Bhubaneswar, Odisha since 2016, Kalanirvana International Art Residency (KIAR) is an independent, artist-run residency and cultural platform. Curated and managed by multidisciplinary artist and international curator Ashis Pahi, the residency maintains a primary home in Eastern India with satellite presences in Hyderabad, Dehradun, and Gujarat. Operating every year between September and March, KIAR offers flexible stays from 2 weeks to 6 months designed to connect global creatives with everyday Indian life, regional heritage, and local artistic practices.
Objectives
KIAR aims to facilitate artistic creation, cross-cultural exchange, and deep experiential immersion into Indian tradition and daily life. Built on a philosophy that art is centered around connection with self, community, and place, the residency provides an open, nurturing environment where international creators live alongside local families and artists. The initiative strives to build cross-cultural dialogue, support artistic research, and foster long-lasting global collaborations without enforcing rigid institutional boundaries.
Programs / Opportunities
- International Art Residency Program: Flexible residencies (hosting 6 to 10 residents at a time) with private/shared rooms, studio access, basic woodworking tools, a library, and shared amenities.
- Exhibition & Showcase Platforms: Open studio days, public talks, screenings, catalog publications, media features, partner directory listings (ARTHUBin.com), and curated solo or group exhibitions for residents staying 25 days or longer.
- Cultural Immersion & Tailored Activities: Cultural programming including traditional art workshops (such as Pattachitra and Tribal art), visits to craft villages and historical sites, yoga/meditation sessions, festival participation, local theater/Bollywood visits, interactive cooking, and community youth art projects.
- Funding Assistance: Letters of invitation to support artists in securing home-country grants, alongside limited semi-sponsored residency discounts (30–50% off fees based on selection).
