Overview
Founded in 2015, The Mudhouse is an artist-founded and operated residency situated in the mountain village of Agios Ioannis on the island of Crete, Greece. Set amidst the dramatic natural landscape and ancient ruins of southern Crete, the residency hosts three two-week sessions each summer for international contemporary artists. The initiative provides village housing, dedicated studio spaces, two daily meals, ceramic facilities, and guided educational excursions to local Minoan archaeological sites led by resident archaeobotanists.
Mission
The Mudhouse aims to nurture creative growth through a combination of solitude, natural beauty, and historical reflection. Grounded in fostering an egalitarian, multicultural, and multi-generational artistic community, the residency encourages interdisciplinary dialogue that transcends traditional boundaries. By providing merit-based Full Fellowships and need-based Partial Fellowships, the organization strives to maintain an accessible retreat where creators can focus on independent studio practice within the historical context of the Minoan civilization.
