Brief Description

Münchner Stadtmuseum, Germany’s largest municipal museum, is launching a new initiative, Artists on Photography, through its Photography Collection. This five-year fellowship (2025–2030) invites one artist and one researcher annually to explore photography’s historical and contemporary evolution, focusing on themes such as gender theory, postcolonialism, and AI. The project aims to bridge archival photographic materials with current artistic and academic perspectives.

Theme: Travel and Souvenir Albums (2025)

The first year’s focus is on Travel and Souvenir Albums from the museum’s extensive collection (19th–20th century). The project will explore how early travel photography shaped historical narratives and how these images resonate in today’s digital and AI-driven era.

How to Apply

  • Artists: Submit a concept proposal for a new artwork based on the Photography Collection, including a budget, timeline, and reference to an existing archive-based project.
  • Researchers: Submit a research statement on the year’s theme and a sample published text (max 10 pages).
