The Edward F. Albee Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1962 by playwright Edward Albee, established using proceeds from his Tony Award–winning play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? For nearly 60 years the Foundation has maintained the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center, known as "The Barn," a residency for writers and visual artists in Montauk, at the easternmost end of Long Island, New York. The center — a converted horse stable renovated in the early 2020s — is named for composer William Flanagan, Albee's longtime partner. The Foundation selects residents using talent and need as its criteria, and its administrative office is located at 192 Lexington Ave. #903, New York, NY 10016.

Albee Fellowship — William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center (Winter/Spring 2027 Residency Cycle)
This is a call for applications to the Edward F. Albee Foundation's residency program at the William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center ("The Barn"). The Center provides writers and visual artists with dedicated, uninterrupted time and space to work, offering en-suite bedrooms and private working studios alongside communal library and kitchen space, accommodating two writers and two visual artists at any given time. Residencies run for full individual calendar months, with no partial-month or cross-month periods offered. The Foundation welcomes applicants of any nationality, including foreign nationals, though it does not advise non-U.S. Fellows on the specific travel requirements for entering the U.S.A. — that responsibility falls to the applicant if selected.

Eligibility
- Open to any creative person over the age of 18, regardless of nationality
- Open to students as well as non-students
- Applicants must be able to take full credit for the creation of their submitted work sample
- Writers who write in a foreign language must apply with English translations of their work
- Applicants may apply as both a writer and a visual artist, but must submit a separate application for each discipline; multiple submissions within one discipline (e.g. as a novelist and a poet) are also allowed, each as its own application
- No cap on the number of times an applicant may apply across cycles
- Former Fellows may apply to return, but must wait a full calendar year after their residency ends before reapplying
Program Benefits & Awards
- Private, individual en-suite bedroom
- Private working studio, separate from the bedroom
- Access to communal spaces, including a library and kitchen
- Domestic Fellows: a $2,500 stipend, distributed upon successful completion of the residency
- International Fellows: reimbursement of expenses, capped at $2,500, distributed upon successful completion of the residency and submission of proof of costs incurred
- Documentation confirming the fellowship, provided by the Foundation upon request (relevant for foreign national travel purposes)

Additional Details
- Residents are expected to work seriously and to support a respectful, focused environment for fellow residents; the setting is described as simple and communal, with residents sharing responsibility for maintaining the space
- Foreign national applicants are advised to independently check U.S. entry requirements with their local U.S. embassy or consulate well in advance, including whether an interview is required
- Passport must be valid at least six months beyond the intended U.S. stay, unless exempted by country-specific agreement
- Foreign nationals should determine whether a visa or approved ESTA (for Visa Waiver Program countries) is required, check applicable customs regulations (including declaration of large sums of money), and confirm any recommended or required vaccinations
- As of January 2025, a U.S. alien registration requirement applies to foreign nationals in the United States for 30 consecutive days or longer; registered individuals are expected to carry evidence of registration at all times while in the U.S.
