Organizer Information

The CH₄rt Competition is organized by Environmental Defense Fund Europe, the European branch of the global environmental NGO Environmental Defense Fund. The organization works on climate science, policy advocacy, and market-based solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a strong focus on methane reduction as part of its broader climate strategy.

This open call is part of the Time for CH₄nge campaign, a Europe-wide initiative designed to raise awareness about methane emissions and their impact on climate change. The competition positions contemporary art as a tool for environmental communication, aiming to translate scientific urgency into visual, emotional, and public-facing narratives. It invites emerging creatives across Europe to contribute to climate discourse through artistic experimentation and public engagement.

Title & Description

CH₄rt Competition 2026 – Making Methane Visible Through Art (Europe)

The CH₄rt Competition is a Europe-wide open call inviting young artists and creatives to produce bold, original artworks that make methane emissions visible, emotionally resonant, and impossible to ignore. The initiative is designed to connect art, climate science, and public communication, using visual storytelling as a tool for environmental awareness and political engagement.

Participants are encouraged to interpret methane not as a technical subject, but as a conceptual and visual challenge. The goal is to transform an invisible greenhouse gas into compelling artistic narratives that can reach broad audiences and influence climate perception. The competition particularly focuses on methane produced through human industrial activity, especially oil and gas production.

Artists are invited to work across a wide range of media, including illustration, photography, collage, painting, digital design, and experimental visual formats. The emphasis is on creativity, conceptual clarity, and emotional impact rather than scientific accuracy.

Selected works will be exhibited in Brussels in September 2026, placing artistic interpretations of methane directly within a policy-relevant and international public context. The exhibition aims to bridge creative practice with climate advocacy and decision-making spaces.
