Short Description:
Located on a serene island off the coast of Massachusetts, the Cuttyhunk Island Artists’ Residency (CIAR) offers visual artists the chance to immerse themselves in their creative practice away from everyday distractions. CIAR welcomes artists at all career stages for a week-long residency designed to foster focus, inspiration, and community. Residents live together at the historic Avalon Inn, share meals prepared by the residency chef, and are encouraged to explore the island as both studio and muse.
For Fall 2025, CIAR will host two sessions:
Session #1: September 2 – 9, 2025
Featuring painter Amy Bennett as Visiting Artist and coastal geologist Dr. Katie Castagno as Visiting Scientist. Both will offer public talks during the residency.
Session #2: September 11 – 18, 2025
A new Professional Practices Focus, featuring Matthew Deleget as Visiting Mentor and painter Aleah Chapin as Visiting Artist. Deleget will provide one-on-one career guidance sessions, and Chapin will give an artist talk.
CIAR welcomes visual artists working in any medium—particularly those whose work can benefit from nature as a creative catalyst. The facilities are best suited to artists with portable or easily adaptable work practices, such as drawing, painting, collage, photography, video, and small-scale sculpture. The residency encourages both studio production and reflective wandering, offering freedom to sketch, plan, or explore.
