Vermont Studio Center (VSC) is an international artist and writer residency center based in Johnson, Vermont. Its mission is to support artists and writers through studio residencies within an inclusive international community, providing time, space, facilities, and opportunities for creative development and exchange. VSC has supported artists and writers for more than four decades and operates a residency program serving a wide range of artistic and literary practices.

Vermont Studio Center Residency Program 2027
Vermont Studio Center is accepting applications for residencies taking place from July through December 2027. The program offers artists and writers dedicated time and space to concentrate on their creative practice while becoming part of an international community of peers, mentors, and visiting practitioners.
Residencies are available for two, three, or four weeks. The program includes private studio space, accommodation, meals, resident presentations, open studios, and access to VSC's Visiting Artist & Writer Program, which provides talks, studio visits, consultations, and opportunities for creative exchange. Applications are evaluated by a rotating jury of practicing artists and writers.
Categories
- Visual Art: Painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital video and photography, craft media, performance media installation, and other visual-art practices.
- Writing & Literature: Fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, playwriting, hybrid forms, translation, and other literary genres.
Eligibility
The residency is international and welcomes artists and writers from around the world. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older. VSC also accepts collaborative applications from teams of up to two people, although residency fees apply to both participants.
Some fellowship opportunities have additional eligibility requirements, while VSC's general fellowship fund is awarded based on the merit of the submitted work. International applicants may be eligible for many of the available fellowships.
Program Benefits & Awards
All accepted residents receive partial fellowships, while 35% of residents receive full fellowships. Fellowships are competitive and help offset residency costs.

Application Fee
Fee (USD): $25.00
For accepted residents receiving partial fellowships, the current remaining residency fees are $2,700 for two weeks, $3,825 for three weeks, and $4,950 for four weeks. A 10% discount is available when residents share a bathroom with another resident, subject to availability.

Additional Details
Applications are evaluated by a rotating jury, and applicants who are not awarded a fellowship may still be considered for admission. Applicants can apply separately in both the Visual Artist and Writer categories, but may not submit more than one application in each category. VSC also accepts original new-media or AI-assisted work, but applicants must disclose and describe the use of AI or new media when applicable.
International residents should note that VSC is not a school and does not provide student or exchange-visa paperwork. Accepted international residents can receive an acceptance letter that may be used in connection with a visa application.
