Dieu Donné is a leading non-profit cultural institution dedicated to serving artists through the medium of hand papermaking. Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the organization provides a collaborative environment for experimentation and artistic growth.

Title & Description

2027 Workspace Residency Program.

This residency is specifically designed for emerging visual artists based in the New York metropolitan area. The program selects three artists to explore paper pulp as a contemporary artistic medium. Through direct collaboration with master papermakers, residents delve into the creative possibilities of hand papermaking to develop new and innovative work.

Eligibility

  • Career Stage: Must identify as an emerging visual artist (early stages of significant recognition).
  • Location: Must reside in the New York metropolitan area (specific counties in NY, NJ, CT, and PA).
  • Legal Status: Must be a U.S. citizen or have the lawful right to work in the U.S.
  • Student Status: Students enrolled in degree-granting or intensive programs during 2027 are ineligible.
  • Availability: Must be available between 10:00 am - 4:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for studio days.
  • Experience: No prior papermaking experience is required.

Program Benefits and Awards

  • Financial Award: A $600 stipend/honorarium.
  • Studio Access: Six non-consecutive days in the papermaking studio with a dedicated collaborator.
  • Mentorship: One-on-one mentorship and introduction to the hand papermaking process.
  • Resources: Access to standard pulp, papermaking equipment, and Materials for the Arts.
  • Exhibition: Participation in a group exhibition at the Jordan Schnitzer Gallery or a partner venue.

Application Requirements

  • Personal Statement: Responses to a few short questions and an artist statement.
  • Documentation: A current resume/CV.
  • Portfolio: Up to eight images of work samples.
  • Note: Reference and motivation letters are noted in supporting documentation.
