Organizer Information
FRAU* schafft Raum is a feminist art and memorial space in Vienna's Nußdorfer Straße 4, in the district of Alsergrund. The space occupies a former tobacco shop (Trafik) where, on 5 March 2021, a 35-year-old shopkeeper was set on fire by her ex-partner and later died of her injuries. Initiated by district leadership and opened in December 2023, the project transforms the site of the crime into a place of remembrance, solidarity, and prevention, addressing gender-based violence and femicide as a human-rights issue. It is carried by the Alsergrund district administration, the Human Rights Office of the City of Vienna (Menschenrechtsbüro der Stadt Wien), the cultural association Kulturverein NuDo4, and insurer UNIQA, and has been curated since its opening by Anna Valentina Ennemoser. The space presents a rotating program of exhibitions by contemporary women artists*, selected through an open call, engaging with femicide and gender-based violence; it is freely accessible to the public and visible around the clock through the space's windows.
