Short Description
The Self-Structured Residency is a program for artists, writers, researchers, and creative professionals to spend time within the context of A-Z West for 1–4 weeks. This residency program is ideal for those seeking a quiet, tranquil place outside of their studio or home to dedicate quality time to their practice and dig deep into themselves.
While we also host a work-trade residency program that includes accommodations in our micro apartments in return for help around the compound, the self-structured residency is an alternative for those who prefer a private living arrangement that is more comfortable and less rugged.
How much does it cost?
Residencies in the Guest Cabin run at a weekly rate (seven nights) of $500. Additionally, there is a $100 cleaning fee.
Residences in the House run at a weekly rate (seven nights) of $1,000. Additionally, there is a $180 cleaning fee. There is an additional fee for pets.
When can I come and for how long?
The Guest Cabin and House are available year-round for self-structured residency guests for 1–4 week stays pending other HDTS artist or visitor reservations. Please be aware that we have tours that come through the guest cabin and house periodically, but you will be given fairwarning if this is scheduled to happen during your stay.
What resources or studio facilities will be available to me?
Your main resource is your accommodations, which are meant to provide time and space to think, research, brainstorm, and gain larger perspective on your practice. With advance communication, residencies can include use of the A-Z West weaving and ceramics studios, but we are not able to provide private workspaces at this time.
Both the Guest Cabin and House are artworks themselves and have many delicate surfaces, so we ask that you do not use mediums such as acrylic or oil paint, pastels, clay or other materials that could damage the artworks or surfaces. If you have special needs for your practice, please communicate with us before applying.
Are meals included?
Meals are not included; residents are expected to provide their own food and cook their own meals.
How do I get to A-Z West and what type of transportation do I use while I’m there?
The closest airport to Joshua Tree is in Palm Springs (PSP). It is a small, regional airport that is still a 1-hour drive from A-Z West. Ontario, CA (ONT), Los Angeles (LAX), and Las Vegas (LAS) can also be flown to/from, but each of these options is still a 2–3-hour drive away.
Arriving with a car is crucial and it is the only practical means of transportation within the desert. You will need a car to obtain daily supplies, to do, and to thoroughly explore this region. Although you will want to spend most of your time at A-Z West, there are many other inspiring sites to see, and you will need a car to do so.
