Organizer Information

The Independent Projects Grant Program is a collaborative funding initiative administered by The Architectural League of New York in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). The program supports independent designers, architects, and creative practitioners in New York State by providing financial resources for innovative projects that advance the role of design as an artistic and cultural practice.

The Architectural League of New York is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing excellence in architecture, urbanism, and design. Through exhibitions, lectures, publications, professional programs, and advocacy initiatives, the League creates platforms for emerging and established practitioners to explore new ideas and address contemporary challenges through design.

Since 2022, the Independent Projects program has been jointly administered by The Architectural League and NYSCA as a dedicated artist support initiative for design disciplines. The program recognizes design as a creative field capable of improving communities, expanding cultural understanding, and generating new approaches to social, environmental, and technological challenges.

The 2026 Independent Projects cycle invites individuals and teams working in architecture and related design fields to propose independent projects responding to the central question: “Where can design go next?” Selected projects will receive financial support to develop research, prototypes, creative investigations, public-facing works, and other design-centered explorations.

Title & Description

Independent Projects Grant 2026

The Independent Projects Grant Program provides funding for New York State-based designers and creative practitioners to explore new directions in design through independent artistic, research, and creative projects.

For the 2026 cycle, the program will award 25 grants of $10,000 each to individuals or teams whose proposals demonstrate how design can contribute to new ideas, practices, and public conversations.

Applicants are encouraged to submit projects that place design at the center of their creative process and demonstrate potential impact within their discipline or community. Proposed projects may include developing design prototypes, exploring community-based design strategies, researching topics in design history, creating experimental design approaches, producing publications, or engaging in critical and theoretical design analysis.

The program seeks proposals that emphasize creativity, innovation, artistic exploration, and accessibility. Funded projects should contribute to a broader understanding of design while making outcomes available to the public.
