The programme is jointly organized by the Madrid Institute for Advanced Study (MIAS) and the Centre for Picasso Studies of the Musée National Picasso-Paris.
Madrid Institute for Advanced Study (MIAS) is an internationally connected institute embedded within the University Autónoma de Madrid and the Casa de Velázquez. It is part of major global networks of Institutes for Advanced Study (NetIAS and UBIAS), which bring together leading research centers dedicated to fostering high-level academic exchange, interdisciplinary research, and intellectual innovation across the humanities and social sciences.
Centre for Picasso Studies (Musée National Picasso-Paris) is the dedicated research unit of the Musée National Picasso-Paris. It focuses on academic research around Pablo Picasso’s oeuvre, its historical interpretation, and its cultural reception across the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular emphasis on international and transregional perspectives.
The PicALsso programme itself is an international research initiative launched in 2025 in Mexico, focusing on the reception of Pablo Picasso’s work and artistic legacy in Latin America.

PicALsso Research Residency 2026 – 3-Month International Research Residency on the Reception of Pablo Picasso in Latin America
The PicALsso programme offers a highly selective three-month research residency for senior scholars and established artists working in the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, or Legal Studies. The core objective is to support advanced research projects that critically examine the cultural, artistic, and intellectual reception of Pablo Picasso in Latin America.
This residency is designed as a transnational academic experience between Madrid and Paris, combining institutional research environments, museum-based scholarship, and international intellectual exchange. Selected participants will develop their projects while engaging with leading researchers, curators, and academic communities through seminars, conferences, and collaborative activities organized by MIAS and the Picasso Research Centre.
The programme emphasizes methodological rigor, originality of research, and international academic impact, and it is structured as part of the broader mission of advanced institutes of study worldwide to foster high-level intellectual production.

Eligibility
- Must hold a PhD (mandatory requirement)
- Strong command of at least two languages among Spanish, French, and English
- Open to international applicants (all nationalities eligible)
- Researchers and artists with an established academic or professional trajectory
- Only projects focusing on the critical and cultural reception of Pablo Picasso in Latin America will be considered
- Proposals must align with the scientific orientation of MIAS and the academic framework of the Casa de Velázquez

Program Benefits & Awards
- A 3-month research residency (non-renewable)
- Monthly stipend of €1,000
- Mobility support:
- Up to €250 for international travel
- Additional €300 for applicants from Africa or Latin America (mobility support)
- Accommodation provided in:
- Casa de Velázquez (Madrid)
- Colegio de España (París)
- Travel reimbursement between Madrid and Paris (up to €200)
- Daily meal allowance of €5 during the Madrid residency period
- Full access to academic activities, including seminars, conferences, and workshops

The file must include:
- Short CV (max. 4 pages) in English, French, or Spanish
- Research proposal (max. 6 pages per language + abstract + bibliography)
- Optional: up to 2 recommendation letters
- Copy of passport or national ID
- Copy of PhD diploma or official certificate (with certified translation if not in the Latin alphabet)
- Bibliography (max. 2 pages)

Additional Details
- Highly competitive international selection process
- Projects must remain consistent with the submitted proposal (no post-selection modifications)
- Mandatory participation in MIAS academic life and research activities
- Fellows must acknowledge the programme in all resulting publications
- Visa and insurance responsibilities remain with the selected researcher
- Residency cannot be postponed or deferred
- The programme is incompatible with other MIAS residencies
- Failure to complete the residency within the timeframe results in forfeiture
