Title & Description

Rivers of Democracy Residency 2026 – Transnational Artistic Residency & Journey Program

Rivers of Democracy is a large-scale, transnational initiative that reimagines rivers as dynamic sites of ecological, political, and cultural significance. Rather than treating rivers as passive natural resources, the project frames them as living entities intertwined with democratic processes, community life, and environmental justice.

The 2026 edition unfolds across three distinct routes in Europe—Vienna (Austria), Northern France, and the Danube corridor (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary)—each offering a unique residency format: a stationary residency, a drifting boat residency, and a cycling expedition. Participants engage in interdisciplinary practices including participatory art, storytelling, ecological research, and public interventions.

The program emphasizes process over product, encouraging experimentation, collaboration, and collective inquiry. Artists and participants are invited to explore themes such as the rights of nature, alternative cosmologies, ecological interdependence, and new forms of democratic participation. The journeys culminate in presentations within major European festivals, positioning the work within high-visibility cultural contexts.
