Organizer Information
The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards are organized by Creo Arts Group Limited ("Creo"), a UK-based cultural organizer founded in 2007 (originally as the World Photography Organisation), whose stated mission is to develop meaningful opportunities for creatives and expand the reach of its cultural activities. Creo's flagship projects include the Sony World Photography Awards, PHOTOFAIRS, and Photo London, and it works in partnership with Angus Montgomery Arts (AMA) to deliver several of the world's leading art fairs. The competition is presented in partnership with Sony Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation responsible for Sony's Entertainment, Technology & Services business. Now in its fifth edition for 2027, the program has grown into one of the largest short-film competitions running today — its 2026 edition alone drew more than 8,400 filmmaker entries from 162 countries and territories.

Sony Future Filmmaker Awards — Competition Rules
This is an international short-film competition open across six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, Immersive, Student, and Future Format. It is designed to give emerging filmmakers exposure, industry connections, and career-building opportunities, alongside cash prizes and equipment for category winners. The competition is administered under a formal set of Official Rules governing eligibility, entry format, submission rights, judging, and prize fulfillment, and is free to enter.

Eligibility
- Open to all members of the public, except employees of the Promoter (or its holding/subsidiary companies), and employees of agents or suppliers professionally connected with the competition or its administration
- Student category: open only to students attending an institution with a formalized film course, credit, or module taught at higher-education level (diploma/degree); entrants must still be registered as a student, or have graduated in the same year, at the time of entry
- Entrants under 18 must have parental or legal guardian consent to participate; a signed consent form is required within 7 clear days of being declared a shortlisted entrant/winner, or the Promoter may select an alternative winner
- Each entrant may submit only one Entry per category, and may only submit their film to one category overall (the same film cannot be entered in more than one category)
- Entries must be finished works (fully completed post-production, including picture lock, online editing, and audio mixing) — works-in-progress are not eligible
- Entries previously submitted to earlier editions of the competition are not eligible, unless significantly re-edited
Program Benefits & Awards
- Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, and Animation category winners: $5,000 (USD) cash prize each
- Future Format category winner: $2,500 (USD) cash prize
- Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, and Student category winners: camera equipment plus a Meta VR device (one of each per winning film, regardless of team size)
- Student category winning film's institution: one piece of Sony camera equipment
- Future Format category winner: one piece of camera equipment
- Immersive category winner: one Meta VR device
- Shortlisted filmmakers in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation, and Student categories: return flights and accommodation to attend the workshop program and award ceremony
- Future Format category winner: return flights and accommodation to attend the workshop program and award ceremony
- Shortlisted filmmakers may each invite one Guest (credited cinematographer/director/producer) to the four-day workshop program, though the Guest's own travel and accommodation costs are not covered
- No cash alternatives are available for any Prize
- Note: camera equipment or Meta VR devices may take up to 6 months to be delivered after winning

Additional Details
- Winners are selected by a Judges panel (Fiction, Non-Fiction, Immersive, Animation, Student); the Future Format winner is selected by the Jury Chair. All decisions are final, with no negotiation entered into
- The Promoter may run a public online rating/voting process; if manipulation is suspected, the Promoter may remove an Entry and reassign the Prize, at its sole discretion
- Winners are announced publicly (surname and country published); the Awards program does not permit anonymous entry or pseudonyms — entrants must use their correct names
- Entrants grant the Promoter and Event Partners a non-exclusive, irrevocable, sub-licensable worldwide license to use the Entry for promotional purposes for up to three years after the Announcement Date, while the author retains full copyright ownership
- A valid US visa is required to attend the workshop program and award ceremony; obtaining the visa is the entrant's own responsibility, and the Promoter is not responsible for visa applications
- If a shortlisted filmmaker or the Future Format winner cannot attend the on-site program for reasons outside their control (e.g. unable to obtain a visa), they are invited to attend the following year only
- The workshop program is conducted in English, with no translation available, and is tailored toward directors, cinematographers, and producers
- Entrants are responsible for any income tax obligations arising from Prizes in their own country
- Competition Rules are governed by English law, with non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales
