Description:
The U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Program offers U.S. artists a unique opportunity to live and work in Japan for a 3-5 month residency, promoting cultural exchange and providing support for artistic exploration. This program is designed for contemporary and traditional artists from diverse backgrounds who wish to develop their work in Japan and engage with Japanese cultural life.

Eligibility:
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
- Artists must be professionals in the following disciplines: architecture, choreography, composition, creative writing, design, media arts, theater, puppetry, visual arts, and performance.
- The program is open to artists from diverse backgrounds, including those historically underrepresented in the arts.
- Artists must be able to begin their residency between October 1, 2025, and December 31, 2026.
Theme:
The program emphasizes cultural understanding through artistic exchange. Artists are encouraged to explore how their practice intersects with Japanese culture and traditions.
How to Apply:
1. Submit a filled cover sheet by March 1, 2025.
2. By March 17, applicants will receive a login for the full application submission (narrative, resume, letters of recommendation, and work samples).
3. Submit the full application, including narrative responses (up to 3 pages), resume, and work samples, by March 21, 2025.
4. Submit work samples electronically following specific guidelines for different artistic disciplines (images, audio, video, manuscripts).
Submission Requirements:
- Cover Sheet: Complete and submit by March 1.
- Narrative: Answer 8 specific questions related to the proposed project, artistic vision, and cultural understanding (3-page max).
- Resume: Maximum of 2 pages (for each team member, if applicable).
- Letters of Recommendation: Two signed letters (addressing artistic quality, engagement with Japanese culture, and adaptability).
- Work Samples: Provide appropriate samples based on your artistic discipline (up to 20 images, video/audio clips, or manuscripts).
Selection Process:
- A panel, including previous fellowship recipients and other arts professionals, will review applications.
- Artists are selected based on artistic merit, potential for cultural exchange, and the alignment of their project with the goals of the program.
- Preference is given to first-time applicants and those who have not previously received the fellowship.
- Proficiency in Japanese is not required.
Program Benefits/Awards:
- Grant Award: $20,000 for a 3-month residency, plus $4,000 for each additional month (up to 5 months) for living expenses.
- Travel Reimbursement: Up to $2,500 for round-trip travel.
- Collaborative teams will receive one joint award.
- Artists must convert the award to Japanese yen.
- Logistical Support: The International House of Japan offers orientation materials, advice, and contacts during the residency.
