The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation established in 1979 (with grants awarded since 1980) to seek out and encourage independent photographic voices working against the fashions and economics of modern publishing. It was founded to honor the legacy of American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (1918–1978), whose 45-year career as a photographic essayist was defined by concerned, humanistic photography addressing the human condition. In its first thirty years, the Fund selected 303 finalists from many thousands of proposals, and it has awarded more than $1.3 million overall to documentary photographers worldwide. None of the Fund's grants are endowed; the program relies entirely on corporate contributions, foundation grants, and individual donations. Beyond the Smith Grant, the Fund also administers the W. Eugene Smith Student Grant and the Howard Chapnick Grant (recognizing programs, not individuals, for contributions to documentary photography education).

The W. Eugene Smith Grant (2026)
The W. Eugene Smith Grant is designed to encourage and support visual storytellers whose photographic work renews the tradition of W. Eugene Smith's dedicated compassion. Special consideration is given to work that promotes social change, embraces new technologies and image distribution, and integrates the tradition of photography and social change with contemporary practice. Judges look for a photographer and project most likely to use exemplary and compelling photojournalism and documentary photography (possibly supplemented by or incorporating multimedia) to address an issue of import and impact related to the human condition — social change, humanitarian concern, armed conflict, or other topics of interpersonal, psychological, cultural, social, environmental, scientific, medical, and/or political significance — ideally expressing an underlying acknowledgement of our common humanity.

Eligibility
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
- Students are not eligible for the Smith Grant (they may instead apply for the W. Eugene Smith Student Grant, selected separately via app.picter.com/contests); applicants cannot apply for both grants simultaneously
- Non-professional photographers may apply — professional documentary/photojournalism experience is not required
- International applicants are welcome and encouraged; applicants may live outside the U.S.
- Applications from multiple creative collaborators are accepted
- Individuals may submit only one proposal/project
- No AI-generated imagery is allowed in submitted images
- The project should be one the photographer is beginning or has an ongoing body of work toward completing — projects that are already fully photographed and now only need editing/exhibition-production, or projects consisting of archiving/organizing existing past work for a retrospective, are not eligible
- Applicants who were short-listed in a prior year, or who are reapplying with the same project proposed in a prior year, may apply again
- A student who will have graduated by the time the grant is decided is eligible to apply
- A professional photographer who has been accepted into a graduate program may apply to either the Smith Grant or the Student Grant, but not both (if applying for the Student Grant, a signed enrollment letter must be included)
Program Benefits & Awards
- W. Eugene Smith Grant (2026): $30,000 total — $24,000 paid upon receipt of the grant, and $6,000 paid upon receipt of 12 digital images and 12 prints within 18 months of receiving the grant
- Two additional Finalist Grants: $10,000 each — $8,000 paid upon receipt of the grant, and $2,000 paid upon receipt of 12 digital images within 18 months of receiving the grant
- Recipients' delivered images and prints become part of the W. Eugene Smith Legacy Collection at the International Center of Photography (ICP)
- Recipients must submit a final report detailing how the grant was used and how it contributed to the project's success
- 46th Annual W. Eugene Smith Grant Ceremony (date TBD)
Application Fee
$50 USD. Fee waivers are available through partnerships with a number of organizations, including the African Photojournalism Database, African Women in Photography, the Authority Collective, Black Women Photographers, Diversify Photo, the Everyday Projects, Foto Féminas, Indigenous Photograph, the Magnum Foundation, Women Photograph, Center for Photography Ethiopia, Matca, Market Photo Workshop, VII Foundation, UCAB PhotoContact Project, Nuku Studio, Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, and Maleza. Photographers who cannot afford the fee should request a waiver directly from one of these partner organizations (contact emails are listed on the source page) rather than from the Smith Fund itself.

Additional Details
- Judging is conducted by a three-member international jury impaneled by the Fund's Board of Trustees, meeting in two sessions: the first to select finalists based on the substantive and intellectual merit of applications, proposals, and photographs; finalists are then given a short period to refine proposals and answer jury questions before a second session selects the Grant recipient, the Grant Fellowship recipient, and the Grant Finalists
- Recipients must sign a Deed of Gift granting the Smith Fund and ICP an irrevocable, worldwide, nonexclusive license to use delivered images/prints in exhibitions and to reproduce them in any media for non-commercial purposes (including advertising, PR, catalogs, books, and similar publications related to the Fund or ICP)
- A project still in early research/access stages (with only a few photographs made so far) is an acceptable submission, provided the written proposal establishes the project's merit; applicants in this situation may supplement early images with stylistically/approach-similar past work
- Applicants are strongly encouraged to meet stated character limits for the biography, project description, and proposal
