The Whitney Museum of American Art is seeking a highly qualified Arnhold Associate Curator to join its Curatorial Department in New York. This full-time Job position is a senior curatorial role focused on contemporary and modern American art, with responsibilities spanning exhibition-making, research, acquisitions, and institutional collaboration.

The role involves active participation in both large-scale thematic and monographic Exhibition development, as well as independent curatorial projects and artist-led initiatives. The successful candidate will contribute to shaping the museum’s curatorial vision while engaging in scholarly research and collection-based programming.

This position is designed for an experienced curator with a strong art historical foundation, particularly in twentieth and twenty-first century American Visual Arts, and demonstrated engagement with contemporary artistic practice.

This role operates within a high-level curatorial structure and requires close collaboration with internal departments and external stakeholders, including artists, collectors, and cultural institutions.

Position & Tasks

The Arnhold Associate Curator will undertake a wide range of curatorial and research-driven responsibilities, including:

  • Proposing and developing exhibition concepts aligned with the institutional mission
  • Contributing to large-scale monographic and thematic Exhibition projects
  • Independently organizing curatorial initiatives and artist projects
  • Conducting advanced scholarly research, including archival work and artist interviews
  • Writing didactic materials and contributing to exhibition catalogues
  • Managing administrative and production aspects of exhibitions
  • Preparing budgets, checklists, floor plans, reports, and documentation
  • Collaborating across departments including Conservation, Education, Publications, and Exhibitions
  • Supporting acquisitions and collection display strategies
  • Maintaining relationships with artists, galleries, donors, and cultural institutions
  • Serving as liaison for acquisition committees or patron groups when required
  • Representing the Curatorial Department in internal and external contexts
  • Engaging with press and professional networks within the international art field

Eligibility
