Organizer Information

Art + Australia is the country's longest-running art journal, first published as Art in Australia in 1916 by Sydney Ure Smith, and continued from 1963 by his son Sam Ure Smith under the title Art and Australia. The magazine adopted its current name, Art + Australia, in 2015, and became a digital-only publication in August 2022. Now a research project of the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne, the magazine publishes discussions, criticism, and reflections on contemporary artistic practice from Australia and abroad, and hosts an openly accessible online archive of its issues dating back to 1963. Su Baker serves as Editor-in-Chief and Jeremy Eaton as Managing Editor.

Title & Description

Call for Proposals: Issue 62.1, 2027 Open Issue

Art + Australia is calling for proposals from artists, designers, architects, curators, theorists, and historians for its 2027 Open Issue (Issue 62.1). The magazine is seeking submissions from around the world that interrogate artistic trends and practices and open new dialogues about art and its relationship to broader contexts. Proposals may take the form of provocations on art history, the current state of the art world, technology, or biennales; criticism of key exhibitions, gallery programs, or publications; overviews of disciplinary trends, curatorial approaches, or art pedagogy; discoveries of overlooked or emerging artists and marginal histories; or a cover artist submission for the issue's digital "cover" image.
