La Biennale di Venezia is a major international cultural institution based in Venice, Italy, known for its multidisciplinary programmes in contemporary art, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and theatre. Its Dance Department (Biennale Danza) develops an international programme focused on contemporary choreography and supports the creation and presentation of new dance works. For the 2027 edition, the Dance Department is inviting international choreographers and dance companies to propose an original choreographic project for production or co-production.

Biennale Danza 2027: International Call for a New Choreographic Creation

The International Call for a New Choreographic Creation seeks an original choreographic project that has never previously premiered, either in studio or in full form. The selected project will be developed and adapted for presentation at the venues of Biennale Danza 2027 in Venice.

The programme is intended to support the production or co-production of new works by international choreographers or dance companies. Applicants must submit a concise artistic description and a short video that communicates the proposed project's concept, choreographic approach, or artistic research. The video may include dance excerpts, a choreographic draft, or an explanatory/discursive presentation in English.

The selected work will have its world premiere as part of Biennale Danza 2027.

Eligibility

The call is open to international choreographers and dance companies. Applicants must propose an original choreographic project that has not previously premiered in either studio or full form.

Applications must be complete and submitted in English through the online application form. Incomplete applications will be automatically excluded from the selection process.

Program Benefits & Awards

The selected project will receive support from La Biennale with a contribution of up to €30,000 toward the production of the new work.

In addition, La Biennale di Venezia will cover:

  • Artistic cachet for the Venice debut
  • Travel and accommodation expenses for the choreographer or company for the Venice premiere
  • Technical rider expenses connected with the Venice debut

A provisional project budget will be requested after selection.

The selected work must be adapted to the Biennale's venues, with all technical and logistical requirements and any props agreed upon with the Biennale's technical and production team at least 8 weeks before the premiere.

Additional Details

Selection will be made by Wayne McGregor, Artistic Director of the Dance Department, at his sole discretion based on the submitted materials.

Following selection, the choreographer or company will sign an agreement with La Biennale di Venezia confirming availability and the feasibility of presenting the project in Venice according to the schedule established with the Artistic Direction.

All technical and logistical requirements for the final version must be communicated to and agreed with the Biennale's technical and production team 8 weeks before the premiere. Requests made after this deadline may not be accommodated, although alternative solutions may be possible depending on equipment already available at the performance venues.
