Organizer Information

The Center for Curatorial Leadership (CCL) is a highly respected nonprofit organization dedicated to developing leadership capacity among art museum curators and advancing institutional innovation in the museum sector. Established in 2007, CCL was created in response to the growing need for curators to engage not only with scholarship and exhibitions, but also with strategic leadership, governance, institutional management, fundraising, and organizational transformation within museums and cultural institutions.

Over the past two decades, CCL has become one of the most influential professional development initiatives for senior curators internationally. The organization collaborates closely with faculty from Columbia Business School, major museum directors, trustees, philanthropists, and cultural leaders to equip curators with executive-level leadership skills. Through intensive coursework, mentorship, networking, and museum residencies, the Fellowship bridges the gap between curatorial practice and institutional leadership.

CCL’s alumni network includes curators from leading museums across North America and internationally, many of whom have gone on to assume directorial and senior leadership positions in globally recognized institutions. The Fellowship is widely recognized for fostering diversity, equity, strategic thinking, and long-term institutional impact within the arts sector.

Major cultural philanthropies and foundations including Bloomberg Philanthropies, Ford Foundation, Mellon Foundation, Terra Foundation for American Art, and several other influential arts supporters support the program. Through this support, the Fellowship remains tuition-free and highly competitive.

Title & Description

CCL Fellowship 2027

The CCL Fellowship 2027 is an international leadership development program designed for senior and established art museum curators seeking to strengthen their institutional leadership skills and expand their impact within the cultural sector.

The Fellowship combines executive-level education, museum leadership mentorship, strategic management training, and hands-on institutional exposure through a multi-phase program running from January through May or June 2027. Fellows participate in intensive sessions led by Columbia Business School faculty alongside engagements with museum directors, trustees, cultural policymakers, and arts administrators.

The program focuses on helping curators move beyond traditional curatorial responsibilities into broader organizational leadership roles. Participants gain practical knowledge in nonprofit management, finance, negotiation, governance, organizational strategy, fundraising, and team leadership while collaborating with peers from diverse curatorial and institutional backgrounds.

A key component of the Fellowship is the individualized residency placement, during which Fellows spend five days working directly with a museum director at a host institution outside their own museum. This immersive mentorship experience offers participants direct exposure to executive decision-making and leadership practices in major cultural organizations.

The Fellowship emphasizes innovation, equity, institutional transformation, and entrepreneurial thinking within museums. Fellows are expected to actively engage with contemporary challenges facing cultural institutions and contribute to broader conversations around representation, inclusion, and sustainable leadership in the arts.
