Carol B Grossman Curatorial Scholar
The Carol B. Grossman Curatorial Scholar is a two-year full-time curatorial training position within The Met’s Department of European Paintings. The role is designed for an early-career art historian seeking practical museum experience and professional development in curatorial practice.
Working under the guidance and mentorship of the European Paintings curatorial team, the Scholar will contribute to research, exhibitions, installations, cataloguing, interpretation, and administrative projects connected primarily with the Department’s permanent collection of nineteenth-century European paintings.

Position & Tasks
The Curatorial Scholar will conduct scholarly research on works in The Met’s collection and related works in other institutions, including research into bibliography, exhibition history, and provenance. Responsibilities also include assisting with installations and exhibitions, maintaining object checklists and files, preparing indemnity and immunity-from-seizure applications, and drafting interpretive and promotional materials such as gallery labels, captions, digital content, and other assets.
The Scholar will participate in meetings with conservators, designers, collections-care specialists, and other Museum departments. Additional duties include maintaining cataloguing and loan records in TMS (The Museum System), drafting scholarly entries for The Met’s website, and undertaking other assigned responsibilities.

Eligibility
Applicants must hold an MA in Art History, with an emphasis on European Painting during the long nineteenth century (1789–1914). The position is intended for candidates with 0–3 years of museum-related experience.
Applicants should demonstrate excellent written, speaking, and editorial skills, strong organizational abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to scholarly accuracy. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint and Teams, and Adobe Acrobat Pro/Photoshop is required. Experience with TMS and bibliographic software such as Zotero is preferred. Strong German reading and writing skills are also preferred.
The position is not open to candidates requiring visa sponsorship.
