Curator / Art Gallery Manager – Brooklyn College Art Gallery

This position is a full-time Job responsible for the leadership, curation, and management of the Brooklyn College Art Gallery. The role combines Curatorial practice, exhibition production, and institutional administration within an academic environment.

The Curator will develop and implement a multi-year exhibition programme, oversee gallery operations, and contribute to public engagement initiatives that connect academic learning with professional art practices.

The role emphasizes the production of high-quality Exhibition programming, including MFA and BFA thesis exhibitions, alongside public-facing cultural events and educational initiatives.

This position is central to shaping the gallery as a platform for Visual Arts, research, and community engagement in New York’s academic and cultural landscape.

Position & Tasks

Exhibition & Curatorial Management
  • Develop a two-year Exhibition and programming schedule
  • Curate major annual exhibitions and student thesis shows (MFA/BFA)
  • Oversee exhibition planning, installation, and deinstallation processes
  • Manage artwork documentation, inventories, and loan agreements
  • Write curatorial texts, labels, catalogues, and interpretive materials
  • Coordinate exhibition budgets, including logistics, shipping, and production
  • Organize public programming, including talks, events, and educational tours
  • Oversee marketing and outreach strategies with institutional partners
Administrative & Operational Management
  • Supervise interns, students, and support staff
  • Coordinate with university departments (security, facilities, IT, maintenance)
  • Ensure gallery safety, security systems, and operational integrity
  • Manage scheduling, workflows, and gallery daily operations
  • Attend departmental meetings and contribute strategic updates
  • Maintain mailing lists and produce gallery newsletters
Funding & Institutional Development
  • Seek external and internal funding opportunities (grants, fellowships)
  • Support institutional partnerships and community engagement initiatives
  • Strengthen cultural and academic collaborations within CUNY network

Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 6 years of professional experience in curatorial or related roles
  • Preferred: MFA, MA in Curatorial Practice, or PhD in Art History
  • Experience managing galleries, museums, or non-profit art institutions
  • Strong background in Curatorial programming and Exhibition production
  • Eligibility is open to applicants authorized to work in the United States
  • Experience in academic or institutional art environments strongly preferred
