Established in 2014, Leveld Kunstnartun is a non-profit international artist residency located in the vibrant mountain community of Leveld, in the Ål municipality of Hallingdal, Norway. Supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and regional councils, the residency serves as a hub for interdisciplinary production. It is situated halfway between Oslo and Bergen, offering a peaceful, focused environment where Norwegian and international professionals can interact with the local culture and landscape.

Leveld Kunstnartun: Artist-in-Residence (AiR) Programme 2027.

This residency is designed to provide high-quality working conditions for professional artists across a vast spectrum of creative fields. Nestled in a scenic mountain setting, the residency fosters a unique horizontal exchange between at least three resident artists at any given time. The program emphasizes high artistic quality, with selections made by specialized juries appointed by national Norwegian arts unions (UKS, Norwegian Authors’ Union, and the Society of Composers). Residents have access to specialized workshops, including a graphic printmaking studio and a lithography press, encouraging both traditional craftsmanship and experimental new media practices.

Eligibility

  • Open to International and domestic professional artists (students are not eligible).
  • Welcomes all artistic disciplines, including writers, musicians, dancers, and architects.
  • Applicants must choose one of three peer-juries (Visual Arts, Composers, or Writers) for assessment.
  • Selected artists must stay at the residency for at least 20 days per month to receive the full stipend.

Program Benefits and Awards

  • Accommodation & Studio: Free stay in fully equipped residences with bright studios, a writing room, and a printmaking workshop.
  • Working Stipend: NOK 6,000 per month.
  • Travel Stipend: NOK 4,000.

Fees

  • Application Fee: Free to apply.
  • Living Expenses: Artists must cover their own food and material costs (Estimated food budget: NOK 3,600/month).

Application Requirements

  • Submit a digital application including a portfolio (PDF).
  • Sound and video works must be provided via 3 accessible web links (no password required).
  • Residency period request: 1, 2, or 3 months (2–3 month stays are particularly encouraged).
  • Selection: Based on the quality of artistic practice as determined by a peer jury.
