Organizer Information

The Studio Residency Grant is offered by Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW), a well-established nonprofit art center in the United States dedicated to supporting artists working in printmaking, book arts, and related studio-based disciplines. WSW is recognized internationally for its commitment to providing technical, conceptual, and material support for artists at all stages of their careers.

Founded as an artist-run organization, WSW operates a fully equipped studio complex that includes facilities for intaglio printmaking, letterpress, papermaking, screenprinting, and photography. In addition to its production facilities, WSW maintains an on-site residency housing program, exhibition space, and a strong community-oriented programming structure. The organization emphasizes collaborative learning, experimentation, and access to specialized equipment that many artists may not otherwise have available.

WSW is particularly known for fostering inclusive artistic environments, supporting women and trans, intersex, nonbinary, and genderfluid artists through residencies, internships, and grants. Its mission centers on expanding access to print and book arts while encouraging socially engaged and experimental artistic production.

Title & Description

Studio Residency Grant – Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW)

The Studio Residency Grant is a six- to eight-week fully funded residency designed for artists who want to develop new work in a highly specialized, production-focused studio environment. Selected residents are given access to WSW’s professional printmaking and book arts facilities, including intaglio, letterpress, papermaking, screenprinting, and photography studios.

The residency is structured to support both independent studio practice and technical exploration. Artists are encouraged to propose projects that actively engage with one or more of WSW’s studio disciplines. The program emphasizes experimentation, material research, and the development of new artistic work rather than pre-existing projects.

Residents benefit from a balance of independence and institutional support. While artists are expected to work autonomously, WSW provides technical assistance, daily check-ins, and optional deeper production support when needed. The residency is embedded in an active artistic community that includes interns, visiting artists, local practitioners, and public programming such as exhibitions and artist talks.

The program also includes communal experiences such as weekly potlucks and monthly Slide Night presentations, encouraging dialogue and exchange among residents and staff.
