Overview
Founded by Ecuadorian-born, New York–based interdisciplinary artist and curator Alexandra Trujillo Tamayo alongside filmmaker Torris Pelichet, Artesana Foundation is a New York–based non-profit platform, residency center, and cultural initiative. Operating at the intersections of visual arts, performance, video, and social practice, the foundation centers its work on ecofeminist research, decoloniality, sustainability, care practices, and technology. Artesana facilitates experimental labs, curatorial programs, performance portfolios, and public showcases across New York City and Ecuador.
Objectives
Artesana Foundation aims to foster artistic experimentation, curatorial innovation, and critical dialogue around the body, nature, and community. Grounded in community-centered practices, accessibility, and cultural inclusion, the organization seeks to challenge dominant narratives, amplify underrepresented voices, and empower emerging and mid-career artists. By bridging Latin American perspectives with New York’s cultural ecosystem, Artesana strives to create regenerative cultural platforms where creativity functions as a tool for healing, collective imagination, and ethical transformation.
Programs / Opportunities
- Resilient Roots Program: A 2-week intensive online or hybrid New York program exploring identity, ecology, and storytelling through performance and ritual—including one-on-one mentorship, access to Materials for the Arts, a final open studio, and a digital publication.
- Bioceno Lab: A 3-week online or in-person New York lab focusing on eco-materials, bio-design, and digital tools for sustainable futures—featuring EcoTech resources, mentorship, access to Materials for the Arts, and a final open studio.
- Artesana Global Curatorial Lab: A 4-week online or New York hands-on curatorial lab exploring decolonial and sustainable curating, complete with mentor consultations, institutional access, and a closing exhibition or publication.
- Artesana Representation Program: A fee-based monthly membership offering emerging and international artists strategic guidance, portfolio assessments, grant/residency application recommendations, and curatorial mentorship.
- Exhibitions & Audiovisual Production: Curated visual art and performance exhibitions, documentary video projects, public showcases, and collaborative multi-media platforms.
Target Community
- Multidisciplinary Artists & Curators: International and domestic emerging to mid-career visual artists, performers, video artists, designers, and curators (with a focus on underrepresented and Latin American creators).
