The Swedish Arts Grants Committee (Konstnärsnämnden) is a Swedish government authority that provides grants, scholarships, and international development opportunities to professional artists. Through its International Programme for Visual and Applied Artists (IASPIS), the Committee collaborates with international residency organizations to support artists in developing their practices and establishing professional networks abroad. Residency in Bangalore, 1Shanthiroad — IASPIS 2027 offers professional visual and applied artists the opportunity to spend two months in Bangalore, India, developing their artistic practice while engaging with the city’s diverse contemporary art and cultural scene.
The residency takes place at 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery, an established artist residency and exhibition space founded in 2003 by Suresh Jayaram. Located in central Bangalore, the organization provides studio residences, a gallery, and a courtyard used for exhibitions, screenings, workshops, and meetings. The residency also facilitates connections and collaborations with local artists, collectives, and cultural organizations.

Eligibility
The opportunity is intended for professional artists working in visual or applied arts. Applicants should earn a living wholly or partly through their artistic practice and regularly present their work to an audience or within an artistic context.
Applicants must live in Sweden or practice most of their artistic activity in Sweden. Swedish citizenship is not required if the applicant meets the residency/practice requirement.
Applicants may be studying when they apply, but they must not be enrolled as students for more than 50% of their time when the award decision is made. Applicants must also meet the Committee’s financial and legal eligibility requirements, including restrictions concerning public debts, bankruptcy, and de minimis state aid.
Program Benefits & Awards
Selected artists receive a SEK 45,000 grant, intended to contribute toward:
- Travel expenses
- Living expenses
- Certain material costs
The residency lasts two months during 2027 and includes studio accommodation at 1Shanthiroad.
The residency also provides an opportunity to connect with Bangalore’s professional art community, explore local museums, galleries and artist-run initiatives, and develop collaborations. Shared meals are a regular part of the residency.
The grant is tax-exempt. After returning home, grant holders must submit a report about their stay but are not required to provide a financial report.

Additional Details
The residency studios are relatively small and are best suited to desk-based work. Partners, children, and pets cannot accompany residents. Artists requiring larger working areas may be able to use the gallery space by prior arrangement with 1Shanthiroad.
Applications are assessed first for formal eligibility and then by the Visual Artists’ Fund’s international panel. At least two panel members review each application. Selection considers both the quality of the applicant’s artistic practice and their financial need.
If applying as a duo or group, one person submits the application and identifies the other participating artists. If awarded, the SEK 45,000 grant must be shared among the participants.
